Commerce Road Wetlands sits along the Passaic River in western Essex County, next to Great Piece Meadow. eBird lists 116 species recorded there in past Octobers, including rusty blackbird, American pipit, late migrant warblers, and a mix of sparrows, shorebirds, and raptors. Last year's October walk turned up 39 species, including semipalmated sandpiper, American pipit, purple finch, and rusty blackbird.

What to bring:

  • Waterproof shoes or boots

  • Binoculars (and a scope, if you have one)

  • Bug spray and sunscreen

  • Hat and water

  • No bathrooms on site
