Hoboken Passes Bird-Friendly Buildings Ordinance, Building on Jersey City’s Efforts

We're thrilled that our neighbor Hoboken has taken an important step for migratory birds by passing a bird-friendly buildings ordinance, helping create a safer flyway for the millions of birds that travel through Hudson County each year. With both Jersey City and Hoboken now taking action to reduce bird-window collisions, our region is demonstrating that local action can make a meaningful difference for wildlife.

Hoboken's ordinance builds directly on the successful campaign that brought bird-friendly building standards to Jersey City earlier this year. Jersey City Birds worked closely with Our Tern to help advance bird-friendly building standards in Hoboken, with the ordinance framework and advocacy strategy developed through our work in Jersey City serving as a blueprint. Our leadership remained actively involved throughout the process, advocating with city officials, supporting outreach to Hoboken residents and their council members, and helping adapt the approach for a neighboring city.

We also brought American Bird Conservancy into the effort, building on a partnership that was instrumental to our work in Jersey City. The ordinance was sponsored by Councilmembers Tiffanie Fisher and Phil Cohen, and we're grateful to everyone who helped move this important effort forward.

Migratory birds don't recognize municipal boundaries. The same warblers, tanagers, sparrows, and other species that stop in Jersey City's parks and waterfronts also pass through Hoboken during spring and fall migration. By taking steps to reduce dangerous glass collisions across both cities, we can help create a safer landscape for birds throughout our shared region—and demonstrate how neighboring communities can work together to address a conservation challenge.
